The expelled ANC Youth League president Jullius Malema turned the memorial service into an anti-Jacob Zuma platform. The memorial service of the 34 mine workers who died during the strike was held in marikana yesterday.Malema addressed the assembled mourners by saying that the government has failed its people and has called for Zuma to leave the presidency. "The government has turned into a pig" said Malema " It eats its own people". Malema accused the Marikana tradegy inter-ministerial committees of not doing enough for the workers. The committee is led by minister in the presidency Collins Chabane. The ANC ministers were unable to respond to the allegations by malema. He further said that they only attended the memorial service for publicity purposes. Several ministers could not bear what was said by malema and left the service early. The ministers included :
  • Siyabonga Cwele (intelligence)
  • Collins Chabane
  • Nosiviwe Mapasa-Nqakula (defencer0

North West premier Thandi Madis and others had to be escorted out of the venue." I want to thank the combrades from the friend of the Youth League because they paid for this tent.Your government did not pay for anything to assist you.The only reason they are here is to pose for the cameras to ensure it can be recorded that they were here" he said.Malema called for the mine workers to be nationalised." We are here with you.You must soldier on.Never listen to cowards. On Tuesday Malema accused Zuma of being a weak leader, meaning the way they handled the matter was not good enough, he also blamed the presidents administration for allowing the police to use real guns to shoot the miners." They will be removed from their positions" he said. The memorial service lost its purpose, and turned into a chaos as an unidentified man was escorted into the tent and greeted Malema before he could grab the microphone to call for Zuma's resignation." Jullius Malema is the president of the ANC.Stand up so they can see you" he said before being chased off the stage. The service was supposed to be held in honer of the victims of the police shootings not the time for pointing fingers as to who is responsible, and calling people names.

Armed mine workers protesting
Political partie's call for urgent investigation after strike ended in bloodshed yesterday in Rusternburg. Mine workers embarked on an illegal strike that has been going on for days, and violence erupted. It is estimated that since the strike began a number of 10 people and more have died.“The loose of even one worker is always one life too many, but the killing of 10 people is a tragedy of epic proportions”ANC spokesperson Khusela Sangoni-Khawe said in a statement. About 3000 operators downed tools in an illegal strike and began protesting. The protest are believed to be linked to rivalry between two unions the national union of mine workers(NUM) and the association of mine workers and construction union(AMCU) over recognition agreement at the mine. Workers demanded a wage hike. They claim that they are earning R4000 a month, with those leaving outside the hostel earning R1000 extra. Reported demands have included pay of R12 500 a month. Striking mineworkers were armed with machetes, pangas, and rocks. There were 400 police officers called to patrol the village, and monitor the mine workers, but that did not seem to stop the mine workers from embarking on an illegal strike. On Thursday (16-08-2012) it was reported that there was a shootout between police and sticker’s .The shootout left over 30 people dead. The political parties namely:
·         ANC
·         IFP
·         COPE
·         DA

Police officers during the shooting of mine workers
Have called for an investigation by an independent body into what started the killings at the Lanmin mine in Marika in the North West. ANC spokesperson Jackson Mthembu said the ANC was shocked about what happened. "All of us feel very saddened by the violence we have seen on television," he said. Democratic Alliance said it was shocked and appalled by what had happened at Lonmin."We call on union leaders, the police and everyone else involved to immediately work towards a de-escalation of the conflict," the party said. "The families of everyone involved, and indeed the nation, deserve to know how and why this bloodshed occurred," it said. The Azanian People's Organisation compared the violence in Marikana to the Sharpeville and Soweto shootings. “As Azapo we can only describe the situation as a massacre not different from March 21, 1960 in Sharpeville; June 16, 1976 in Soweto and June 17, 1992 in Boipatong," the party said. People who are involved in the shooting are to be suspended from work. The shooting took the nation by shock and it raised to questions of could there have been a better way to prevent this blood shared? Whom to blame for this chaos, the mine workers who embarked on an illegal strike armed with machets,or the police who were to monitor the situation that got out of had?or the two unions?.The matter is still investigated.for more infor http://www.news24.com/RelatedGalleryItemModal.aspx?type=image&id=cb83a5cb-2b76-4dc4-9c95-76a27d2757de&itemNum=0&iframe

This then resulted to delaying the results. Members forged attendance register during branch meetings. The manipulation of list resulted in some branch members taking the party to court because candidates who had been nominated and elected were removed from the list. The names of the candidates were allegedly relegated to the bottom of the list while other names were allegedly pushed up.Eastern Cape chair main Phumulo Masaulle condemned members who forged attendance registers during branch meetings.

  • " It is not acceptable that in an attendance register you find people who died a long time ago," Masualle said.According to the unverified results the anti Jacob Zuma faction, led by Thandekile Sabisa is said to have been elected to lead the region. The anti Jacob Zuma faction is said to have won the election by one vote from the challenger, William Ngozi. The OR Tambo region is the ANC's biggest in the Eastern Cape and the second biggest nationally, after the Ethekwini region in KZN.Sabisa blasterd some provisional leaders. He said they were interfering in the region and causing unnecessary tensions. He said after the realignment of the region where two of its sub-regions. namely:
  • Ntabakulu
  • Mbizana
were moved to the Alfred Nzo region, there were "opportunistic elements" which created parallel structures that undermined elected leadership. The OR Tambo region is at the centre of the battle between supporters of Zuma and those calling for the president to be removed at the party's December elective conference in Mangaung."Those responsible should be punished possibly expelled from the ANC because they are not candres" said Sabisa in response to the allegations. The controversial list is currently being investigated by African Union Commission chairman Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma.

DA CHALLENGES ANC

Picture:Lindiwe Mazibuko at the DA jobs rally in Polokwane.

The Democratic Alliance sets challenge for ANC to match their record on textbook delivery. This is after the Limpopo textbook saga. The discovery of dumped textbooks in Limpopo came as a shock to the country and has generated a bad publicity for the ANC government in the Limpopo province.A compiled report by education director Marry Metcalfe in response to the department assertion of 98% of textbooks were delivered to Limpopo learners after schools went without textbooks for seven month. It turned out that the percentage was incorrect. The ANC has acknowledged that the delivery of textbooks in Limpopo was a failure by the government, and believes that those who are found to be responsible must face the consequences of their actions including criminal charges, said the ANC secretary Gweda Mantashe in Johannesburg. He further said that "many problems at local government have to do with political tensions within the ANC and DA".Mazibuko said that the ANC should take up the DAs five point challenge to improve the quality of basic education. The challenges are:
  • making sure that all students have textbooks for every core subject in their grade
  • deliver textbooks before the school year starts
  • eliminate corruption in the procurement of textbooks.
  • the ANC needed to deliver the right textbooks for the right learners,
  •  and match the DAs textbook funding allocation.
" In the Western Cape, an amount of R466m has been budgeted over the next four years for the textbooks" said Mazibuko. The DA called on all ANC-governed provinces to rise to the challenge and match DAs textbook delivery records.
